Newspapers & Magazines Recycling Benefits Everyone

We are now in an age where newspapers & magazines recycling is very important to help protect our environment from further damage. In the age of going green, concerned consumers are interested in all ways to contribute to the cause. Newspapers, magazines, and other forms of paper is a major source of destruction of our forests and pollution in our atmosphere. Nearly 40 percent of the wood consumption is used to make paper and paper products such as newspapers, magazines, tissue paper, bulletins, paper plates and so on. As a result of this demand upon nature, nearly half of the world’s forests are completely wiped out.

Let’s face it if we continue to over consume and waste much of the paper products we produce, the world will be in a serious situation, not having wood for reading, writing, building, heating, and so on. Our forests not only provide products for our safety and entertainment, standing forests protect us from the elements. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and destroying them contributes to greenhouse warming.

Each year billions of paper products such as newspapers, magazines and more are sent on to be recycled in various paper mills around the globe. The process starts with collecting the recyclable newspapers, magazines, etc from the various city recycle bins and drop off spots and is then transported to several mills around the world. The world’s largest paper mill is in Aylesford Kent, England.

The first thing that happens at the plant itself is that the old newspapers, magazines and so forth are put through a pulping machine. This machine takes out the staples, and the bindings and other things that cannot be recycled. It is then turned into pulp. This process is done by having the paper dispersed into another machine that takes out all the ink, the glue, glossy coverings etc and reduces it into pulp. This process requires a chemical solution (such as chlorine).

Once the pulp is cleaned in this fashion, water is added to the mixture to facilitate the rolling of the pulp in yet another machine. The pulp smoothly goes through the rollers and is pressed down while the excess water is squeezed out of it. For those of you old enough to remember wringer washing machines, they had rollers as well. Once the clothes were washed in the gyrating tub; the clothes were passed through the rollers to get out the excess water before they were put on a clothesline to dry.

The end result of this pressed pulp is a clean white paper, which can now be used for new newspapers around the world.

Make sure that you use your recycle bins, and bags for your newspapers, magazines and other paper products, or take them to the designated drop off points in your city or town.

By recycling paper, instead of throwing it into the trash, we are saving our trees; a precious commodity that we cannot afford to lose.
